Character in Motion
While Judo focuses on “The Gentle Way” of throwing, Karate focuses on striking, balance, and incredible body control. It is a powerful tool for classroom management and behavioural development.
Curriculum Links:
- Flexibility and Strength: Pupils perform a range of movements that improve their overall range of motion.
- Rhythm and Patterns: Learning “Katas” (sequences) improves memory and coordination, similar to dance elements in the PE curriculum.
- Personal Challenge: Focuses on the “Personal Best” aspect of the curriculum, encouraging pupils to beat their own previous performance.
- Respect and Self-Regulation: Teaches children how to channel energy into controlled, purposeful movement.
The “Fun” Factor:
From the loud “Kiai!” (spirit shout) to earning their first coloured belt or certificate, Karate builds a sense of pride that pupils carry with them all day.
